Balsam Magasine Archive     National Blood Transfusion Services   Background   The Palestine Red Crescent Society was appointed by the Late President, Yasser Arafat, to establish a National Blood Transfusion Services Center, to ensure the provision of a reliable blood supply.   The center aims to raise public awareness about the importance of blood donation through a recruiting program encouraging people to voluntarily donate blood and give the gift of life. The Service conducts blood donation campaigns in all parts of the country, provides a strategic storage program, assures the availability of a safe, reliable blood supply, cooperates and coordinates with all hospitals and blood banks regarding technical and medical concerns, and operates 24 hours a day. In 1996, it was mandated by the Late President, Yasser Arafat, to provide emergency medical services in Palestine. Today, with a total of 41 stations and substations throughout the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT), 22 mobile field posts, 122 ambulances, 346 Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and over 500 volunteers, the EMS department provides an efficient, flexible and crucial service for the Palestinian people. Along with the EMS department, 1996 also saw the foundation of the Emergency Medical Institute, which trains staff and EMTs in the field of pre-hospital emergency medical care in accordance with international standards. 	Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi (MD, MSc.) A medical doctor trained in the former Soviet Union, with post-graduate training in Jerusalem, and a MSc. in business administration and management from Stanford University in the US, Dr. Barghouthi was a key actor in the in the introduction of modern concepts and models of health care in Palestine. He has lectured at universities such as Harvard, John Hopkins, Stanford and think thanks such as Institute of Strategic Studies in London, Chatham House, the Brookings Institute and the Sydney Institute. In 1979 Dr. Barghouthi and a number of like-minded doctors and health professionals established the Union Palestinian Medical Relief Committees (UPMRC) of which he is president. UPMRC today is one of the largest and the leading Palestinian non-governmental organizations providing health and community services to more than 1 million people (1/3 of total population) yearly, throughout 435 Palestinian communities.

Bat Shalom Bat Shalom is an Israeli national feminist grassroots organization of Jewish and Palestinian Israeli women working together for a genuine peace grounded in a just resolution of the Israel-Palestine conflict, respect for human rights, and an equal voice for Jewish and Arab women within Israeli society. Bisan Center Bisan Center for Research and Development was established in 1989 as an independent non-profit organization pursuing a comprehensive approach to community development in Palestine. BTselem B'TSELEM - The Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories was established in 1989 by a group of prominent academics, attorneys, journalists, and Knesset members. Defence for Children International/Palestine Section (DCI/PS) (DCI/PS), established in 1992, is affiliated with the Geneva-based Defence for Children International, NGO established in 1979, with consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, UNICEF, UNESCO, and the Council of Europe. The Early Childhood Resource Centre (ECRC) The Early Childhood Resource Centre "ECRC", is a Palestinian non-governmental organization in Jerusalem. Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD) ICAHD is a non-violent, direct-action group originally established to oppose and resist Israeli demolition of Palestinian houses in the Occupied Territories. Ittijah Ittijah is the network for Palestinian non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Israel. Established in 1995, Ittijah was founded in response to a clear and widely felt need for increased cooperating and exchange between Palestinian Arab organizations, both large and small. Nakba 50th anniversary of the Nakba: 1998 marks the 50th anniversary of the Nakba (cataclysm). Public Committee Against Torture in Israel An independent human rights organization founded in 1990, monitors the implementation of this ruling in detention centers and continues the struggle against the use of torture in interrogation in Israel and the Palestinian Authority through legal means. Tamer Institute for Community Education An educational non-gov. non-profit org. established in 1989 as a natural and necessary response to urgent needs in the Palestinian community. The most important of those needs, according to the Institute, is the need to acquire means to help people learn and become productive. Teacher Creativity Centre (TCC) The Teacher Creativity Centre (TCC) is a Palestinian, non-profit, non-governmental organization, established in May 1995, by a group of teachers working in schools in the government, private and UNRWA schools. This Week in Palestine "This Week in Palestine" features a current listing of cultural and art exhibitions, music concerts, festivals, religious events and celebrations, tourist sites and services, as well as list of hotels, restaurants, theaters, museums, and other vital information necessary for any visitor to Palestine. Union of Health Care Committees (UHCC) (UHCC) is a Palestinian health NGO that was founded in 1985. It aims at upgrading the social & health aspects for the Palestinian society.   United Nations Information System on the Question of Palestine (UNISPal) (UNISPal) was established and is being developed by the Division for Palestinian Rights in response to successive General Assembly mandates. United Palestinian Appeal (UPA) UPA was established in 1978 in the State of New York by a group of Palestinian-Americans from the business and professional communities who shared the objective of creating an efficient and professionally managed charity that would assist needy Palestinians in Palestine.
