Occupational Therapy History in the Hashemite Kingdome of Jordan

Jordanian Association for Occupational therapists (JAOT)

Occupational Therapy History in the Hashemite Kingdome of Jordan;

     Occupational Therapy services started in Jordan in the early 80ís when some of the handicapped center (e.g. Alhussein society for the physically challenged children) gave its services through employed foreigner occupational therapists or volunteers.

Three Jordanians were granted with scholarships to study occupational therapy in USA and UK through the royal medical services (RMS) and the first occupational therapy department was opened at Farah Royal Rehabilitation Center in 1983.

The idea of establishing an occupational therapy school came up in 1989 to offer three years diploma adopting British curriculum

         The Jordanian collage was the first building block in the Jordanian Association for Occupational therapists (JAOT) by generously accepting the honorary presidency her Royal Highness princess Majeda Raíad, who provided all the possible objectives and subjective supports for the association

       The collage provided the national and the international markets with the qualified occupational therapists. in 1996  the collage was closed and the academic program was stopped due to the lack of the students, and challenges encountered then.

        1992 the school gained the international recognition and the accreditation from the world federation for occupational therapists, and the association became member at the previous federation, and from the ministry of higher education in Jordan.

        The dream of having the BSc program started to come true when the negotiations started with the ministry of higher education in 1998 until we saw the dream come true in 1999 when the program was started in three of the national governmental universities .The first OTís with the BSc graduated in the spring of 2003.

      New challenges came up to the surface, new profession, services, put much loads on the new graduates to carry on the profession. The association was rejuvenated and renewed its systems and regulations with youth spirits in 2004.

Occupational therapists are holding the responsibilities for increasing the awareness and proofing the significance of occupational therapy services and the development of the profession in Jordan and hopefully on the global wise too.
